Blues Music Lesson Plan: Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf

$4.00

Blues music comes from the southern states in the U.S. It originated with black people who were enslaved and dreamed of one day being free. While working in the fields, they sang about these feelings of wanting to be free and hoping one day that they will get to live their own lives. Because they didn't have any money, they made musical instruments out of everyday objects like boxes, brooms and string. We will learn about two blues musicians who have a lot in common with each other.

Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters had a lot in common, including very unusual nicknames. They came from the same place, took their music on the road, and had the same troubles. And yet, these men were what we could cal frenemies. Yes, they were friends, but that also means they fought, just like siblings can sometimes.

Students hear the story of these two men and then cut and paste their pictures next to their name on a blues poster.
